Many benign lesions can be removed for medical reasons if they are inflamed, repetitively traumatized from pressure or friction, itching, bleeding, and/or not healing. We use cryosurgery (liquid nitrogen), electrosurgery (electric needle), laser, sharp blade (shave removal), scissors (snip removal), or even excision (scalpel or punch technique) to eradicate these.
If any suspicion of malignancy or uncertainty of the diagnosis, these are commonly sent in for pathologic evaluation as well (biopsy). Benign lesions can also be removed and treated as well with similar techniques for cosmetic purposes with great results; however, insurance will not likely cover the procedure for this reason.
