Nail Surgery

Conditions of the Nail Unit

Understanding Nail Diseases

Diseases of the nail unit can involve the nail itself, the nail bed, or surrounding skin (nail folds). Common conditions can be infectious (fungus, yeast, bacteria), cancerous or benign tumors (moles, angiomas, melanoma, squamous or basal cell carcinoma, warts), inflammatory (skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis), discoloration (many causes), trauma induced (subungual hematoma, ingrown nail).

Sometimes these conditions can require surgical procedures such as total (or partial) nail plate removal, nail unit biopsy and, rarely surgical excision. In the hands of our experienced board-certified dermatologist, these procedures can be handled efficiently, effectively, and in a comfortable manner to restore function and treat the underlying conditions.
