Common Skin Reactions & Conditions

Understanding Rashes

Rashes are when the skin has mild redness, small red bumps, and in severe cases, redness, swelling, and blisters. Many rashes are caused by skin irritants and can also be classified as contact dermatitis.

In other cases, the rash appears in conjunction with a viral infection, fungal infections, bacterial infections, exposure to certain bugs, or exposure to extreme heat.

The word “rash” generally implies a temporary outbreak of red, bumpy, scaly, or itchy patches of skin, sometimes with blisters or welts. These are commonly due to reactions to food or medication, extreme heat or sun exposure, friction or irritating chemicals, insect assaults, infection (bacteria, yeast, or viral) or be the first manifestation of an underlying skin disease or systemic illness. The cause of most sudden rashes are usually already known by the person and can be managed with over the counter moisturizers, hydrocortisone creams, anti-histamines and/or cool compresses, and gentle skin care.

When a rash persists, worsens, or recurs despite conservative measures, you should be evaluated by our team of dermatologists.
