When Should a Benign Lesion Be Removed?

Many benign lesions can be removed for medical reasons if they are inflamed, repetitively traumatized from pressure or friction, itching, bleeding, and/or not healing. Benign lesions can also be removed for cosmetic purposes electively. Whether removal is for medical or cosmetic concerns, we use the following modalities: Cryosurgery (liquid nitrogen), Electrosurgery (electric needle), Lasers, sharp blade (shave removal), scissors (snip removal), or even excision (scalpel or punch technique) to eradicate these. The chosen modality depends on the physician’s assessment of the lesion(s) and what is deemed most effective and least likely to cause visible scars.

If there are any suspicion of malignancy or uncertainty about the diagnosis, these lesions commonly sent in for pathologic evaluation as well (biopsy).
